Hundreds of outsized beds have been ordered by hotels in Turkey. The Basketball World Championships start this weekend. Some 288 basketball players with an average height of 6ft 6ins are arriving in Istanbul today (Thursday).

FIBA, the governing body of the sport, said hotels in the Capital city had been taken largely unawares and forced to do a “a giant get-together” marketing run on outsized beds.

“Giants of the sport need giant beds to sleep in peacefully,” said Patrick Baumann, Secretary-General of FIBA. “We’ll do everything possible to ensure the best players in the world are given every comfort to help them reach peak performance.”

The Four Seasons hotel is playing host to the USA team, favorites to win the title. Most of the other teams are staying at the Marriott. The hotel has ordered in excess of 100 beds measuring over 7ft long.

“These are very big boys to accommodate, and we have put in new beds and bed extensions to assist as much as we can in making their stay comfortable,” said the manager of one of the hotels.

The Iranian team are also staying at the Marriott. They play the USA on September 1st in a group match.
