Spain play The Netherlands tomorrow evening in the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The outcome has yet to be known, but Spain are the favorites and widely tipped to win.
Either way, it will be a first time World Cup win as neither side has won this prestigious award to date.
If Spain do win it will be somewhat ironic in a way, for the style of football they play has its roots firmly embedded in The Netherlands.
It’s all down to Johan Cruyff. He is the Catalonia coach who introduced a style of football sometimes known as “total football” where every player is immersed totally in the game.
They have to dribble and pass in ways that hold possession of the ball. They have to utilize every inch of the green, one minte spaced out, the next bunched up, depending on the situation and the needs of the ever-changing game.
The style is a system developed at the Amsterdam football club, Ajax where Cryuff himself learned the finer points of the game.
Cruyff has a dilema, therefore. Will he be rooting for his home team of The Netherland, or the team that uses a style he introduced to the country that has adopted him?
“I am Dutch,” he told El Periodico. “But I will always defend the football Spain play.”
Pressed further, he conceded that “It is Spain’s game to lose, but I will take intense joy if they win it.”
One thing is certain, every person in Spain who has a pulse will be anxiously awaiting the results, desperately hoping, and of course, everyone in The Netherlands will be doing exactly the same.
Let the best team win!
