It took 63 minutes, but David Villa squashed Portugal’s hopes and elevated Spains chances all in an instant with the one and only goal of the match. Both teams played a spectacular game, but only one could win and it was Spain’s turn.
In many ways it was unfortunate that the two countries from the Iberian Penninsula had to compete against each other. Spain and Portugal are good neighbors, but in any kind of match there are winners and losers. Portugal had the most to lose. They were on a 19 game winning streak – all the way back to November of 2008.
That one goal pushed Spain into the quarter-finals. A nice place to be, but now the competition gets harder to beat. Spain has only lost two of their last 31 games – a great record by any standards.
Spain’s next match is against Paraguay, who beat Japan on Tuesday in a penalty shootout, 5-3. The Spain Paraguay match takes place on Saturday.
Will Spain equal their European win of 2008 with a World Cup win? Who knows, or quien sabe, as the say in Spain.
The final match of FIFA’s 2010 World Cup, whoever it may be, will take place on Sunday 11th of July in Johannesburg.
