Shetland, in the far north of Scotland, is the only UK destination to make it into The Lonely Planet’s top 10 places to visit in 2011.

This island wilderness that shares a latitude with Alaska and the southern tip of Greenland, despite nearly 40 years of oil prosperity, is still a largely undiscovered paradise.

There are 15 inhabited islands in the chain of over 100 islands and islets that make up this northern archipelago. It’s a birdwatcher’s heaven and one of the last outposts in Britain where it’s easy to spot an otter in the wild.

The Lonely Planet, whose influence is considerable and whose advice is followed by thousands, says of Shetland that it is the “last untamed corner of the UK.”

“This year’s picks for Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2011 reflect the passion for discovery that our readers have,” said Lonely Planet spokesman Tom Hall. “It’s no surprise then that we’ve singled out a little-known but beautiful and rewarding corner of the UK as a must-see next year.”

At a time when Shetland is actively encouraging visitors more aggressively than normal, this endorsment must be a welcome one indeed. Especially as The Lonely Planet also advises “adventurous travellers to step this way.”
