During the off season, NASCAR warned teams and drivers that any public criticism of the sport would result in immediate action. At least two drivers have already been fined, one as high as $50,000, for saying things the governing body feel were potentially damaging to the sport.

On Monday evening NASCAR confirmed that some action had been taken. However, no details were given.

“It is the sanctioning body’s obligation on behalf of the industry and our fans to protect the sport’s brand,” said Ramsey Poston, a NASCAR spokesman.

“Any action taken by NASCAR has nothing to do with the drivers expressing an opinion – it’s focused on actions or comments that materially damage the sport. We have specifically discussed this in meetings with teams, drivers and stakeholders.”

No drivers were prepared to discuss the situation publicly. This is not surprising considering the tough NASCAR stance on the matter.

NASCAR has taken what can only be described as very strong and aggressive steps to bring the flagging sport back to the public interest.

Howeever, they have gone one step further, feeling apparently that just boosting the sport’s image was not enough. They have decided to eliminate the possibility of any more drivers making damaging negative remarks and bringing the sport down in the eyes of the public.

“It doesn’t make sense to criticize the food in a restaurant if you expect people to come back,” said chairman Brian France.

NASCAR has been hit hard by the recession. They have a lot to regain, and they obviously feel they can do that through renewed effort. What they have clearly stated they don’t need is for those involved in the sport to make negative remarks in public.
