Home Loan Modification Program: Can Homeowners Help Themselves Get More Affordable Home Loan Options?

The home loan modification program does work, but it can be complex and difficult, according to many homeowners to try it. However, there is evidence that most lenders, though not all, are seeking more affordable home loan options for homeowners, but more needs to be done.

The initiative, part of Obama’s stimulus package, is properly called Home Affordable Modification Program, or HAMP for short. It is aimed at those people who face financial difficulties and who can’t make their mortgage payments.

Increasingly, homeowners are attempting to help themselves, rather than relying on overworked and overstretched lenders, who in many cases can appear to actually be working against them.

Homeowners who want to speed up the process, as time is valuable if you hope to prevent foreclosure, can start by gathering together a complete record of their entire past mortgage payments. They can also build up a complete picture of their present expenses. These two records together will save time when it comes to a potential lender evaluating the current situation.

They should also not attempt to hide anything that may seem unpalatable. Be completely honest and open, asking what can be done to overcome any difficulties that may exist. This alone can help to avoid flat out rejection.

A covering letter needs to be created. This is in effect a “hardship letter” that tells how you are in your present position. Try to be objective and write it from the viewpoint of an observer, being honest and unbiased throughout. Structure the letter well without fluff or unnecessary trivia.

It is becoming plain that homeowners need to be more proactive in their attempts to secure a home loan modification. There is also evidence to suggest that those who are surviving the foreclosure crisis are those who take the initiative instead of relying on lenders to help them out.
